0-1 Is the True Origin of Science

Solving problems matters in science, yet the greatest challenge lies in raising genuine questions. Without identifying valid questions, even the most powerful deductive tools serve no purpose. This is the significance of 0-1 breakthroughs: creating something from nothing and unveiling hidden underlying logic. Subsequent 1-N work — deduction, verification and industrialization — can be accomplished faster by later-generation researchers, instruments, and even AI.

AI excels at tackling well-defined problems. It tirelessly processes massive literature and performs intricate calculations. Nevertheless, it struggles to unearth brand-new questions from real-world phenomena. It can gallop freely across the vast expanse of 1-N advancement, yet it cannot accomplish the pioneering ground-breaking work of 0-1 innovation.

Looking back on the history of science, all major systems originate from such foundational starting points. Without Copernicus’ heliocentric theory, modern astronomy could not have advanced. Without Newton’s law of universal gravitation, humanity’s understanding of the universe would remain muddled. Without binary 0 and 1, the enormous framework of computers and artificial intelligence would never have been built. Countless subsequent achievements flourish upon these origins, and the trailblazers of these starting-point insights are remembered by history.

Life science likewise awaits reconstruction at its origin. The Shared-Pore Origami-Windmill Hypothesis represents an exploration at the 0-1 level, encompassing two threads: ion transmembrane transport and the mechanism of DNA tetramers. This hypothesis is not conclusive and awaits experimental validation. It is hoped that future instruments will capture the dynamic rotation of proteins. Should it be verified, it will not only give rise to industrial applications but also address humanity’s three ultimate questions — Who am I? Where do I come from? Where am I going? — and drive humanity to reinterpret the fundamental nature of life.

Philosophy holds that spiritual civilization rests upon a material foundation. In-depth intellectual inquiry cannot be separated from real-world conditions. From national to provincial, municipal and district authorities down to the family, this era has afforded me a relaxed and stable environment, allowing me to calmly ponder these seemingly “quixotic” questions about the essence of life. My journey has not been without setbacks, and I am sincerely grateful to the Party and government, as well as to the times in which I live.

Many independent-minded explorers hold lofty ideals yet are trapped by survival pressures. They regard scientific research as a means to change their fate and fall into cycles of repeated trial-and-error. Without practical material support, complete innovative loops can scarcely emerge from mere speculation.

This marks the dividing line between practical endeavour and idle speculation: speculation produces only opinions; genuine practice puts experimentation first and theory second, submitting hypotheses to the test of experiment and time. Bioelectricity and genetics form the two cornerstones of the two models, acting as main trunks awaiting future branching, blossoming and fruition.

0-1 pioneering work inevitably meets incomprehension and criticism. Science evaluates hypotheses not by status or sentiment, but by evidence and experiments, and by whether they can explain anomalous real-world observations.

For me, the phase of earning a living is over. My sole pursuit now is the quest for truth. It is sufficient for me to fully lay out all my organized thoughts. As for when these ideas will be examined and accepted, I shall let nature take its course.

AI may accelerate the proliferation of 1-N outputs, yet the 0-1 step — perceiving questions from reality and interrogating fundamental origins — can only ever be accomplished by human beings.
