Passion Deserves Cherishing, Yet Safety Must Come First

When I watch Wang Jibing, the delivery rider poet, drafting verses in his mind while riding to deliver orders, my heart fills with both admiration and worry.

Beneath the crushing weight of life, he still holds fast to poetry, persisting in literary creation amid ceaseless toil. Such passion is incredibly precious and worthy of deep respect. Still, I earnestly wish to offer him a sincere reminder: do not lose yourself composing poems while riding. When you are behind the wheel, safety always stands paramount.

Electric scooters weave through urban traffic, where road conditions shift in an instant, and danger can emerge from a split second of carelessness. When your mind is fully absorbed in crafting lines of verse, you fail to keep watch over the road, surrounding vehicles and pedestrians. Your reflexes slow down, and hidden dangers follow close behind. Inspiration is rare and precious, yet any accident resulting in bodily harm would leave no vessel to hold even the most beautiful poetic sentiment. You can pause to jot down a flash of inspiration, but life can never be lived again.

I recall a senior leader who was both my mentor and elder from years past. Once, on an impulsive whim, I tried driving and accidentally steered the car into a ditch, damaging the vehicle. Instead of scolding me harshly, he offered earnest advice: my mind was constantly preoccupied with research thoughts, never fully focused on driving, so it would be best for me to avoid getting behind the wheel. I have kept this warning close to my heart ever since. Though I hold a driver’s license, I have not driven a car for many years. Human mental energy is finite. When your mind is heavy with tangled thoughts, forcing yourself to split focus for another task will easily create hidden safety hazards.

Many people chase their beloved pursuits wholeheartedly, pouring all their time and energy into them. Some are obsessed with literary writing; some immerse themselves in scientific research; others devote themselves to honing crafts. Every genuine passion merits respect and lifelong guardianship. Yet no ideal or pursuit can take precedence over safety. Safety does not restrain passion—it forms the firmest bottom line that allows passion to endure for years on end. If you overlook risks and charge forward blindly driven by sheer enthusiasm, you may pay an irreversible price.

Abide by fundamental boundaries before undertaking any endeavor, and learn when to advance and retreat while chasing dreams. A passion that lasts a lifetime does not mean reckless self-abandonment without regard for all else. Instead, it calls for measured restraint and clear judgment of priorities. Focus fully on traveling while you are on the move; indulge in thoughtful creation only after you stop. There is no need to frantically seize fleeting sparks of inspiration the moment they surface. Once you arrive safely, calm your mind and savour your insights slowly—you can still put every inner feeling down on paper.

This truth applies not merely to riding scooters, but to the entire journey of life. No matter how lofty your goals or how fervent your pursuits, you must uphold the bottom line of safety. In scientific research, never prioritize progress above hidden risks; in building a career, never chase results at the cost of basic principles. Rash haste may quicken your pace temporarily, yet it plants long-term dangers.

Hold fast to safety first, then pursue the ideals of your heart. Passion is worthy of cherishing, yet safety must always be placed at the very front. Only with lasting peace and wellbeing can we have ample years ahead to stay true to our original aspirations, cling to our passions, gradually realize our heart’s desires, and forge our own unique path through life.
