Ten Heads Transform into Nine, Rotation Orders the Universe: The Legend of the Eight-Trigrams Wind Wheel and the Nine-Bird Scientific Theory

Ancient myths contain the fundamental principles governing the operation of heaven and earth. The classic story of Jiang Ziya creating the Eight-Trigrams Wind Wheel to quell disasters is not only a Chinese folk tale passed down for thousands of years, but also a bond through the Nine-Bird Theory (the theory of dove-like particles) to corroborate with the contemporary origami windmill model in life sciences, integrating classical imagery and microscopic scientific laws perfectly.
At the end of the Shang Dynasty, a ten-headed divine bird from the Heavenly Court violated the laws of heaven and was banished to the mortal world. Fierce-tempered, the bird refused to repent and instead wreaked havoc on earth. Plague spread, droughts and floods struck frequently wherever the bird passed, leaving people displaced and living in misery. King Wen of Zhou, sympathetic to the suffering of all living beings, begged Jiang Ziya to stop the disasters.
Jiang Ziya mastered the deduction of the Eight Trigrams and the laws of nature, and saw through the inherent weaknesses of the ten-headed bird. The fierce bird feared rotating qi fields, the yin-yang power of the Eight Trigrams, and the deterrent oscillation formed by light, shadow and wind. To safeguard peace on earth, he chose natural bamboo and wood to build the first Eight-Trigrams Wind Wheel in the world. The wheel’s structure was exquisitely aligned with the natural rhythm: the rim corresponded to 365 days a year, twelve spokes to twelve months, blade forks to the twenty-four solar terms, and innate Eight-Trigrams patterns carved on the surface to gather the yin-yang energy of heaven and earth. Standing on a tall pole of heaven and earth, the wheel spun endlessly in the breeze, with interlaced light and shadow and powerful wind sounds, forming a vast balancing qi field.
Sensing the powerful deterrence of the wind wheel, the ten-headed bird dared not confront it head-on and fled in panic. During its escape, the bird was punished by heaven: celestial beings cut off one of its heads, turning the once rampant ten-headed bird into a nine-headed bird. Severely weakened, the nine-headed bird could no longer cause large-scale disasters, and the mortal world gradually returned to peace and tranquility.
Since then, the Eight-Trigrams Wind Wheel spread among the people and gradually evolved into a folk windmill for praying for blessings, warding off evil and protecting safety. The philosophy of rotation harmonizing all things has deeply integrated into the blood of Chinese culture.
This mythical evolution corresponds precisely to the Nine-Bird Theory, also known as Jiuzi Theory. Using the implication of "the dove taking over the magpie’s nest", it vividly interprets the iteration of old and new theories in science. Originally meaning the replacement of the original pattern by newcomers, in academic research it refers to the gradual improvement of a new theoretical system that replaces flawed traditional cognition.
This analogy applies clearly to life science research: the traditional ionic theory and Hodgkin-Huxley (HH) equation have limitations in explaining some cellular electrophysiological phenomena, just like the chaotic ten-headed bird; the origami windmill model embodying Eastern rotational wisdom is the orderly Eight-Trigrams Wind Wheel, explaining the mechanism of ion channels through a dynamic rotating structure; revising debatable views in old theories—such as potassium efflux dominating repolarization—is like cutting off redundant fallacies; a logically rigorous and complete new scientific cognition is like the mature nine-headed bird, completing the renewal of academic understanding.
Ion exchange inside cells follows the law of conservation of intracellular membrane area, and the total internal space of membrane channels remains fixed. Space conversion follows a unified rule: the space occupied by 2 potassium ions equals that of 3 sodium ions and 3 calcium ions. Ion replacement can only occur within equivalent space, with no surplus or vacancy.
Different ions have different charge specifications: potassium and sodium ions are monovalent cations, each carrying 1 unit of positive charge; calcium ions are divalent cations, each carrying 2 units of positive charge. We use a unified proportional format to record replacement relationships: the first two values represent the number of ions exchanged in equivalent space, and the last value represents the net charge change inside the cell after replacement.
Cardiomyocytes complete orderly ion replacement through the windmill structure, with clear logical ratios for each group:
· Ratio 2:3:1, 2 potassium ions equivalently replace 3 sodium ions, resulting in 1 extra unit of positive charge inside the cell;
· Ratio 2:3:4, 2 potassium ions equivalently replace 3 calcium ions. Due to the divalent nature of calcium ions, the cell finally gains 4 units of net positive charge;
· Ratio 3:2:1, 3 sodium ions equivalently replace 2 calcium ions, adding 1 new unit of positive charge inside the cell after charge conversion.
Ions complete gradual alternating replacement based on the equal-space principle. Charges accumulate and shift steadily, driving membrane potential changes step by step. This is the core reason why the cardiomyocyte action potential curve is smooth and continuous without abrupt jumps.
Neuronal electrical activity follows a 3:2 replacement ratio of sodium to potassium ions. The two ions match in spatial size and charge valence, and their quantity ratio synchronously reflects the law of charge change, ensuring continuous and smooth nerve impulse transmission.
The entire ion operation law accurately restores the triangular potential trajectory of -60mV, -40mV and +40mV, solving microscopic life mysteries layer by layer based on the law of wind wheel rotation.
From the ten-headed fierce bird wreaking havoc to the formation of the nine-headed form, from the ancient Eight-Trigrams Wind Wheel ordering heaven and earth to the origami windmill model unlocking the mysteries of life—the Nine-Bird Theory connects humanistic myths and cutting-edge science, confirming rotation as the universal underlying law of all things. Ancient natural wisdom rooted in China shows unique value in modern scientific research, successfully completing the innovation of academic cognition and opening up a broader space for the future exploration of life sciences.
